Season 3: 'One Size Does Not Fit All' Podcast
Episode 1: The changing face of care and supporting the wellbeing of the culturally diverse workforce
We have been working hard to deliver the new season of our podcast ‘One Size Does Not Fit All’.

This season we are focusing on the topic of supporting a culturally diverse aged care workforce.

Our first guest is Professor Irene Blackberry, the John Richards Chair and the Director of the Care Economy Research Institute at La Trobe University.

We asked Irene if there are best practice projects or innovative models to help people from new and emerging communities pursue a career in aged care.

Irene told us that there are many courses of interest to migrants, such as courses offered by the Migrant Resource Centres that are related to Ageing and Disability Support. There are also programs offered by the NSW Government such as ‘Skills that work.’ Irene tells us that these types of programs not only assist migrants with their English skills but these also assist them in better understanding the Australian aged care system.

Season 3 has been co-produced with the support of Red Hat Films.

Towards Specialisation - A video & resource kit for aged care providers
Towards Specialisation - A video and resource kit for aged care providers gives information on how to become verified as a provider of specialised aged care services. It supports providers to understand the Specialisation Verification Framework and how it can benefit your organisation and the older people you work with.

The 8 videos focus on people and communities recognised as special needs groups under the Aged Care Act 1997. They're edited versions of online workshops held with aged care providers. In the videos, we hear from providers, peak bodies, researchers and older people.

The videos and resources provide you with:
  • An understanding of how the Specialisation Framework supports you to offer services that are the best fit for people who identify with special needs groups
  • Insight into the needs of these people and how difficult it can be for them to find their best fit
  • Clarity on the right time to start the specialisation verification process
  • An understanding of verification requirements
  • Steps for processing your verification application
  • Links to useful resources
The Towards Specialisation kit is funded by the Australian Government and produced by the Eastern SSD Partnership, SSD Connect Alliance and Bayside City Council SSD.

Help us spead the word - aged care volunteering

The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) supports regular in-person volunteer visits to give friendship and companionship to older people who:
  •  don’t have regular contact with friends or relatives
  •  are feeling isolated from their culture or heritage.
Anyone can refer an older person to be matched with a volunteer visitor, including their aged care service provider, family and friends, or they can refer themselves.

To be eligible, an older person must be receiving government-funded residential aged care or a Home Care Package.

If you know someone who could benefit from companionship, refer them by visiting health.gov.au/acvvs
RMIT's - 'How we use social media as we age?' research project

This research project is a three-year ARC-funded Discovery project that explores the complex and diverse ways older adults (65+) engage with technology and data. Participation in this research involves two interviews per year for two years. Interviews can be done in the home or online. As a thank you for their time, participants can either choose an iPad or 4 x $50 gift cards (one for each interview), depending on their preferences.
